Explanation of Stockpiled Days
State law permits school systems to “bank” or “stockpile” instructional days by extending the regular student day. Normally students are required to attend school 6.5 hours per day and teachers are required to work 7.5 hours per day. Robertson County students attend school 7 hours per day which allows us to stockpile a total of 13 days for other purposes. The joint calendar committee recommends to the Board how these days will be used.
In a typical year we have not missed 13 inclement weather days, therefore some of these days have been used for other purposes. (See below for more detail.)
It is important to note that the teacher day has not been extended to “stockpile” days, nor are teachers being asked to work extra. The teacher day consists of 7.5 hours. The number of days in which teachers work is outlined in the teacher contract.
2009-2010
Stockpiled days used for non-weather related purposes in 2009-2010 are:
- Parent-Teacher Conferences -- September 17, 2009
- Curriculum Planning -- November 4, 2009
- Curriculum Planning -- January 6, 2010
- Parent-Teacher Conferences -- February 16, 2010 -- See note below.
- Early Release Days (one day divided six ways where students are dismissed one hour early so teachers can participate in collaborative planning) -- September 2, October 21, December 16, January 27, March 10, and April 28
This original plan leaves eight days that can be used for inclement weather.
Note: As a contingency plan the Board of Education also approved using the May 27 student holiday as a make-up snow day if needed. Also part of this plan is the possibility of making May 28, our current last day of school, an instructional day, and moving report card day to Saturday, May 29. These changes will only take affect if we need additional inclement weather days.
Robertson County Schools have closed for inclement weather on:
- January 7, 2010 -- stockpiled for inclement weather
- January 8, 2010 -- stockpiled for inclement weather
- January 11, 2010 -- stockpiled for inclement weather
- January 29, 2010 -- stockpiled for inclement weather
- February 1, 2010 -- stockpiled for inclement weather
- February 2, 2010 -- stockpiled for inclement weather
- February 3, 2010 -- stockpiled for inclement weather
- February 9, 2010 -- stockpiled for inclement weather
- February 10, 2010 -- stockpiled for staff development on February 16 but used for inclement weather
- February 16, 2010 -- to be made up on the planned May 10 holiday
- March 22, 2010 -- GMS and GHS missed due to water main leak -- to be made up on the planned May 27 administrative day.
Now that the Board of Eductation has made February 16 an instructional day we can use nine stockpiled days for inclement weather. The contingency plan explained above also allows us to dismiss school due to the weather without major changes to our school calendar. The safety of our students -- your children -- is our top priority.
2010-2011
Stockpiled days used for non-weather related purposes in 2010-2011 are:
- Parent-Teacher Conferences -- September 14, 2010
- Curriculum Planning -- January 4, 2011
- Parent-Teacher Conferences -- February 10, 2011
- Early Release Days (one day divided six ways where students are dismissed one hour early so teachers can participate in collaborative planning) --To be determined
This leaves nine days that can be used for inclement weather.
