The Area 24 Robertson County Annual Spring Special Olympics were held on Friday, April 29, at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park in Springfield.   Athletes and coaches representing eleven local schools and the adult center H.A.T.S. attended the event.  Participating schools included: Coopertown Middle, East Robertson Elementary, Greenbrier Elementary, Greenbrier High, Greenbrier Middle, Jo Byrns Elementary, Jo Byrns High, Springfield High, Springfield Middle, Watauga Elementary and White House Heritage High. A total of  ninety athletes participated in the day’s track and field events.2

The morning schedule began with the parade of athletes and opening ceremonies.  A group of selected athletes from all participating schools and programs led the pledge and Special Olympics oath. At their conclusion, Ms. Stephanie Mason, Assistant Director of Robertson Schools declared the games officially open.

Additionally, on hand that day, and serving as volunteers were various service organizations from local middle and high schools.  Several of those groups included: Ms. Renee Dorris and the Greenbrier High school track team, Mr. Zach Holden and the Springfield High School track team, and the Springfield High Beta Club.

A special thank you goes out to the Springfield Civitan Club for their volunteering and support of Robertson County Special Olympics.  Also, thank you goes out to the Robertson County Transportation Department and the bus drivers.

Without the support of the coaches and volunteers of Area 24 Robertson County Special Olympics the day would not have been a success. A special thank you goes out to Mitzi Burton, Betty Smiley and Anna Merchant.  They worked tirelessly behind the scene getting volunteers, lunches and physicals together for the day.
