More than 700 eighth grade students visited The Center in Springfield on Tuesday, May 17, for the first-ever Career Fair sponsored by the Robertson County Chamber of Commerce.

Forty-three local businesses and schools were on hand to provide awareness to the students as they considered the day’s theme, “Where Will You be in 13th Grade?”

According to Robertson Education Initiative director Kathy Gunn, “We want the 8th grade students in Robertson County to be thinking about where they will be after high school.”

Gunn pointed out that more than 65% of jobs in the future will need some kind of post-secondary degree and, “With Governor Bill Haslam’s Drive to 55 Campaign, we need our students thinking about their future in terms of furthering their education with a certificate, associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree or higher.  It is important to be thinking about their future when they start 9th grade so they won’t have trouble with entrance requirements into post-high school programs.”

Event coordinator, Steve Sparks said the event was worthwhile.

“The first ever county wide career fair in Robertson County for our 8th graders was a success.  We hope the students connected with some of business representatives that may spark an interest towards a specific career path.”
