District School Nutrition Supervisor Patsi Gregory recently earned her place in the top 2% of the nation’s school nutrition leaders when she successfully completed the School Nutrition Specialist Credentialing Program.

A School Nutrition Specialist holds the highest credentials in the School Nutrition profession and can only achieve this recognition through a combination of academic and experience requirements.

Upon earning this level of achievement, Gregory joined an elite group of roughly 1,300 peers, out of a total of more than 55,000 nutritional supervisors nationally.  Only 35 in Tennessee have reached this level of qualification.

According to their website, The School Nutrition Association established the School Nutrition Specialist (SNS) Credentialing Program in 1997 to enhance the professional image of school nutrition professionals, elevate professional standards and enhance individual performance.”

Thy further state that, “The SNS Credential is a mark of excellence and achievement that reflects what it takes to manage school nutrition programs in today’s challenging climate. The SNS Credentialing Exam evaluates candidates’ knowledge and skills required to perform specific job activities related to managing or directing school nutrition programs.”

Patsi said that the preparation for the certification test was extensive, covering numerous technical subjects including: equipment selection and usage, staffing, purchasing, and scheduling of food deliveries and staff service hours.

Despite the difficulties in achieving this status, Gregory said there was no question from the start that this was her goal.

“We owe it to our students and parents to provide the best service possible,” she said.  “I did it for the kids.”
