RISE Students Make Mid-State College Visits

RISE Students Make Mid-State College Visits

Robertson County Rise recently provided RISE high schoolers a chance to visit and tour two private colleges, Vanderbilt University and Lipscomb University.  Twenty-four students, 3 teachers (and 3 parents who followed in cars) were present on this college visit.

The first two hours of the trip were spent at Vanderbilt University, beginning with an informational session, and ending with a campus tour.  During the informational session, students learned that Vanderbilt requires students to live on campus all four years, that their total per year cost is $85,000, but they have financial aid packages (above Federal aid) that average $65,000 per student, and that they are "test optional" for the next school year. The average ACT for last year's class was a 34, but that number is skewed by the test optional admissions.  Several students expressed interest in the Blair School of Music and the pre-med programs.

At Lipscomb University the admissions office paid for the group’s lunch in the cafeteria.  During the meal they were given an informational presentation as well.  Lipscomb is a smaller school, with 4000 students, and has a Christian tradition with chapel every week.  Their School of Business is internationally renowned, and several students showed interested in it. The School of Pharmacy, volunteer and missions opportunities, and Christian teachings were also areas of interest. Lipscomb's total per year cost is $35,000, with an average financial aid package of $25,000.

Robertson County Schools believes that visiting different types of colleges and universities helps prepare our students in making a smart decision for post-secondary education.  Last spring, the RISE group visited MTSU, and this spring, will have yet another visit to a state school to be determined.
