Darden is a native of Springfield, and played guard for The University of Tennessee, Knoxville under coaches Ray Mears and Don Devoe during his years at UT.  He was selected in 1979 as a member of the SEC Tournament Championship squad.

His career average of 6.56 assists per game ranks second in the school’s history, and he holds the school record for career assists with 715.  Through each of his four years of play, Darden led his team in assists, and he was a third-team All-SEC selection in 1977 and ‘78.

Darden said his selection to the Basketball Legends was a surprise and an honor.

“The SEC called me from Birmingham and told me I’d been selected,” he said.  “I wasn’t expecting anything like that. “

Teaching at his high school alma mater has been a joy for Coach Darden, who has now given up coaching basketball to younger coaches, but still teaches wellness courses in the gym.  He said that when he was in school he never expected to wind up teaching where he himself attended high school, but that it’s been a joy to help shape the lives of those now coming along behind him.  He is truly a role model for his students to follow.
