Springfield High School senior, Dayron Johnson signed a football scholarship acceptance with Tennessee State University on Wednesday, Feb. 6, in the SHS auditorium.

Head football coach, Dustin Wilson said Johnson was a great asset and will be missed, but that he’s proud of his accomplishments.

“Dayron is living out a dream of his,” said Wilson.  "It is great that he gets the opportunity to play but it was earned, every bit of it. He did what he was supposed to do; he discarded distractions and kept focused on a goal. Now he gets to pursue a college degree and continue to play football, fully funded!”

Johnson did indeed focus on his goal, and has amassed a number of accomplishments in his pursuit of it.  He was TSWA All State in 2017 and 2018.  He was a 2018 Mr. Football Semifinalist.  He also was:

Robertson County Player of the Year for 2016-18

            Most Versatile Player – 2016

Offensive Player of the Year – 2017-18

And it’s a fitting tribute to his efforts that the SHS football squad made the 4A quarterfinals every year of his football career.

For his part, Johnson is already looking ahead to the next step in his playing career.

“It feels good knowing that you have a chance to play at the next level,” he said. “It’s a dream I had since I was a little kid.  I want to come in as a freshman and make an impact and be the best athlete I can be for my team and myself.”

Coach Wilson said that from the beginning it was apparent he had a motivated player on his team.  As a freshman, Johnson scored a rushing touchdown against Macon County and began to mimic, “feed me”  in the end zone by waving his hand towards his mouth.

“From that moment on, questioning his competitive nature was not an option,” said Wilson.
