Posted on 11/17/2015

Springfield Middle School has become the first of Robertson County Schools’  21 schools to become accredited under the authority of AdvancED, a national accrediting association.  According to their available information, AdvancED is, “the global leader in providing continuous improvement and accreditation services to over 32,000 institutions serving 20 million students worldwide.”

A team of five AdvancED members visited SMS on Thursday, Oct. 29, and under the leadership of Dr. Mary Gist, evaluated the school through a diagnostic process intended to create improvement with a focus on the three main areas of:

1.     Impact of teaching and learning

2.     Capacity of Leadership

3.     Use of Resources

A total of 73 individuals were interviewed in this process.

Five assessment standards used to evaluate the school were:

1.     Purpose and Direction

2.     Governance and Leadership

3.     Teaching and Assessing for Learning

4.     Resources and Support Systems

5.     Using Results for Continuous Improvement

The AdvancED team found that public perception of SMS has improved markedly over the past several years.  They also noted that parents, teachers and students feel safe and that the STEM and REACH classes are favorably viewed by parents of students.

Based on their overall findings, the team recommended that SMS be awarded the distinction of accreditation by AdvancED.

Dr. Grant Bell, principal of SMS, said he was pleased with the findings and grateful to his faculty for their hard work, which produced the desire goal.  Jana Iwanowski served in a lead role for the school in organizing the process from the school’s perspective.

“It was an honor to be chosen to lead the AdvancEd accreditation process at Springfield Middle School,” she said. “I was so impressed with the teamwork displayed by all our staff that made up the different committees, along with their committee chairs. This process showed the family-like culture here, and allowed us an opportunity to reflect on our practices in order to become the best school that we can be.”
