Westside Elementary School Special Education students received a special treat on Friday, April 1, as seventeen-year-old Heather Scott reached out to them in a way they will not forget.

Scott arranged for local character actors from Character Visits 4 U, who dress as fairy tale characters, to entertain and interact with the students at a special morning gathering.

Along with all who were in attendance, Scott said the event was a huge success.

“The goal I had in mind for this event was simply to make the kids smile and feel a sense of accomplishment,” she said. 1“Special Needs students don't get the chance to be in the spotlight often at all, so this event allowed them to be the stars of the show. I just wanted these kids to feel a sense of self-worth and confidence and I think that learning a song and performing for their peers helped them to realize that even though they feel different from the people around them, they are just as special and they have just as much potential.

“The kids sang "Let It Go" and "You Got A Friend In Me".  Overall, I think the event was a huge success. All of the kids loved being surprised by theDisney characters from Character Visits 4 U and they were all smiling and laughing the entire time, and that is the only thing that matters.”

Scott continued, saying, “I have been looking for a way to give back to my community for a while now but I couldn't think of what to do until a few weeks ago when my Mom helped me to come up with the idea for this event. It was really fun and I would love to do it again for another school in the community. We fed the kids and teachers pizza and gave each child a "goodie" bag. Each child will also receive a picture of themselves with the Disney Characters.  I could not have pulled it together without the help from Buzz In Auto Wash, Mrs. Lisa Cobb from Robertson County Family Resource Center, and Mrs. Michelle Darnell, the principal of Westside Elementary. I am very grateful for their help and I am glad that the kids had fun. “
